The preview comes ahead of the score’s full release, which will be available on Friday, November 05 to coincide with a remounting of the show in partnership with the National Arts Centre (NAC). Frequencies is performed live in Halifax and presented virtually on November 05 and November 06 as part of the NAC’s Theatre and Physics Symposium.

Part live techno concert, part autobiographical confessional, the production - written by Collier with Giller Prize nominee Francesca Ekwuyasi and Zuppa Theatre’s Stewart Legere - is a multimedia, mixed reality storytelling show that examines family, loss, change, and grief, all while using original compositions that explore time and perspective based on the frequencies of nature, humanity, and the universe as a soundtrack to the narrative.

“2014” provides insight into this unique creation, expressing an interpretation of both the grandeur and commonalities that connect us all through life and death on this planet.

“After the rumbling and rising chords of the intro, you hear a series of different rhythms overlaid one by one. The first and most constant one you hear represents death, with each pulse representing a human death based on UN World Population data. I wanted to understand how frequently someone was experiencing what it is to die, how frequently people were experiencing losing someone,” explains Collier. “The next rhythms represent people being diagnosed with breast cancer and HIV respectively, and then the rhythms of people being born. You begin to hear how the world is changing, how our population is increasing. I kept looking for more - could I hear the next generation? Of the females being born now, how many would likely have children and how many? How many cars are rolling off the assembly line? 2014 was a year in which a significant change occurred in me and I began to make the kind of choices that have led to the creation of Frequencies, and I hope the music conveys my sense of wonder and gratitude for my chance to be here.”
